Art as vehicle
a term used by Grotowski during the final period of his creative work to describe the form of performance art he was working on with the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski in Pontedera (from 1996 known as the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards) while creating Action. Art as vehicle is also used as the name for this final period of his creative output. In the second half of the 1980s, after moving from the United States to Italy, another term – Ritual Arts – was used for a short time. The origins of the term can be found in the 1960s and Peter Brook’s Preface to the book Towards a Poor Theatre, where Brook wrote: ‘For Grotowski acting is a vehicle’ (p. 12). These words were repeated and expanded upon during a conference held in Florence in 1987 during which Grotowski issued a reply to Brook in the form of a paper that became the foundation for the text ‘Performer’. Taken together with the text, ‘From the Theatre Company to Art as Vehicle’, they form something of a double manifesto on this stage of his experiments, presenting a vision of art as something which is not an aim in itself but rather a practical means and also the form for processes of a spiritual nature. Following Grotowski’s death, work on Art as vehicle has been continued by Thomas Richards.
